I can provide a direct comparison of the Stokke and Hipposmile highchairs because I own both of them. The two chairs look basically identical though the Stokke is much sturdier and the pieces fit well together. The Hipposmile includes a seat cushion.
Quality problems with the Hipposmile
- uneven sides (chair doesn't lie flat to the ground)
- during installation, the backboard cracked slightly from the thin wood. This was due to poor threading on the nut as it pushed against the backboard. Customer Service said it was the installer's fault and not a quality issue. Replacement board would cost $10 + delivery. I fixed it with tape instead. :)
I bought it when it was on sale at $90. If you can pay a little more, I would go with the Stokke...you'll get back the difference when you sell it again. Otherwise, Hipposmile is a cheaper alternative.

We purchased the Happy Hippo High Chair in July of 2007 for our 20 month old son. It arrived quickly with all parts and my husband was able to assemble it without problems. I initially chose this chair over similar chairs due to costs and the fact the Hippo High Chair came with straps and a washable cushion verses having to pay extra with the other chair options. Immediately my son climbed up to sit in his "big boy" chair with ease. His feet no longer dangle and he is able to join us at the dinner table verses sitting besides us in a traditional high chair. After 3 months of use we are still pleased. The finish has remained nice despite repeating cleanings of wet and dried foods and the snap button for the straps are still in good functioning order despite many clip-ons and offs. The only thing that is on my "could be better" list is the seat cushion which worked fine up until I hand washed it and hung to dry. Now it has a tendency to pull forward on the seat pulling the middle seat strap to the underside of the seat. I have to pull the cushion back to the proper position about once a week. The back cushion still functions the same. Despite that, overall the Happy Hippo High Chair is a great product, our son uses it everyday and loves it.

We were thrilled to find a chair of this style for a more reasonable price. It keeps our three year old sitting at the table during meals. Prior to using this chair (and whenever we visit others' houses now), he is up and down, in and out of his chair throughout the meal. We also use it to allow him proper height and support at the piano (he just started Suzuki lessons).
It seems like a high-quality item, and was easy to assemble. The only issue we had was that after a while the seat started to slip back and forth. But after re-tightening the nuts on the crossbars, it is once again stable--a very easy fix.

We are thrilled with this chair. It was a reasonable price, is very sturdy, and looks nice. We have used it with our daughter from age 6 months- which the manufacturer does not recommend- but it has worked beautifully for us.
We will definitely buy another one for the next child.

Great chair at a great priceMar 20, 2007
I have nothing but great things to say about the chair and the buying experience. The chair is very sturdy, looks great and was easily assembled. It arrived in perfect condition. And the company's customer service was responsive and answered my questions promptly. I was hesitant to buy because I've heard such great things about the other manufacturer of this type of product, but their price seemed so high. I'm so glad I went with Hipposmile -- I would do so again without hesitation and would recommend this chair to anyone in the market. And by the way, my 20 mos. old son LOVES this chair. He can climb into it himself and loves the independence it offers him.
